Veteran landlady celebrates 50 years in the business

74-year old Liz Jackson, a lifelong member of Cirencester Local Victualler’s Association (LVA) has just celebrated an incredible 50 years in the licensed trade.

Liz, who successfully ran the Crown at Cerney Wick near Cirencester in Gloucestershire for 18 years with her husband Colin, and the White Hart at Winchcombe before that, is so used to running a pub that despite selling up last year and hoping to retire from The Crown, she just can’t stop and is now helping her son Andrew Crump, who took over as landlord of The Plough at Stratton a year ago.

But she says things have changed so much since she started in the trade –and much of it is the fault of babysitters charging extortionate fees, she maintains.

“It’s changed so much since the old days,” she says. “Friday nights was the men’s night – and the women would stay at home. But on a Saturday night, it was steak and chips night and everyone would be out, leaving the kids with a babysitter. Trouble is that now, by the time you’ve paid the huge fees babysitters demand, there’s not as much left to enjoy spending on a night out.”

“We sold The Crown so we could retire, but I’m a landlady to my very core and I couldn’t see Andrew running the pub alone when I was still ready and willing to help,” added Liz.

Since the family have moved to The Plough, Friday nights are indeed the pub’s busiest nights, but Liz has recently reported an upsurge in trade on Saturday nights. “Perhaps the babysitters are not being as greedy,” she laughs.

The family marked the triple celebration last Wednesday, welcome over 100 customers to Andrew’s first anniversary as The Plough Landlord, Liz’s 50 years in the business and Colin’s birthday.

George Arkell at Arkell’s Brewery which owns the pub said: “We feel that we’ve got ‘two for the price of one’ at The Plough with Andrew’s enthusiasm and Liz’s 50 years of expertise. She is an incredible lady and we are proud and delighted that she came to work alongside Andrew. We’ll be raising a glass at the Brewery to her second 50 years in the licensed trade.”
